The Breaking of a Glass at a Jewish Wedding
Did you know that it is customary at the end of a Jewish wedding ceremony to break a glass?
This symbolizes The destruction of the Temple in Jerusalem - and that even in times of great joy, the pain and losses suffered by the Jewish people should be remembered. Sometimes Psalm 137:5 is recited during this tradition: “If I forget you, O Jerusalem, May my right hand forget her skill.”
There are several other interpretations of this tradition's symbolism, but pretty much everyone agrees on one thing - the glass should be covered in cloth or napkins so that no one is injured!!
Our purpose in sharing these tidbits is not to imply that these traditions have to be followed by believers in Jesus/Messianic Jews, but in order to help others better learn about and understand their Jewish neighbors and friends so that they can better build bridges and connections with them.
