What is the Tanakh?
Every now and then you may hear us or a Jewish friend refer to the Tanakh. What is the Tanakh exactly?
The Tanakh (pronounced with a glottal /h/) is the Hebrew Scriptures (or what Christians know as the Old Testament)! It is an abbreviation for the Torah ("Teaching," also known as the Five Books of Moses), the Nevi’im ("Prophets"), and the Ketuvim ("Writings"). Hence the abbreviation TaNaKh is used.
Our purpose in sharing these tidbits is not to imply that these traditions have to be followed by believers in Jesus/Messianic Jews, but in order to help others better learn about and understand their Jewish neighbors and friends so that they can better build bridges and connections with them.
